The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistical measure used to rank countries based on their level of human development and well-being. It was created by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and first introduced in 1990 as a more comprehensive indicator of development than traditional measures such as gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. The HDI takes into account three dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, access to education, and a decent standard of living.
